Biography
Pheno Jess Green (AKA Pheno) is an Australian guitarist, vocalist and composer. Her career spans over twenty years, she has performed and recorded for theatre, dance, television and visual art collaborations. Jess has recorded several studio albums including ‘The Singing Fish’, ‘The New Dynamites’ ‘Tinkly Tinkly’ and ‘Dragon Year’. She currently plays with the Laura Jean band and has performed with Katie Noonan,The catholics, Ensemble Offspring, Jim Conway and many more. Highlights include; performing at the Closing Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, a commission for the 2019 Australian Women In Music Awards, and commissions as composer in residence for the 2019 Canberra International Music Festival. Performing as Pheno in her Art-Pop project, Jess has supported international artists including Joan as Policewoman and the New Pornographers. In 2019 she collaborated with visual artist Nell for her work “Ghost Songs at Rockgate” (Sydney Contemporary) and In 2020 she was commissioned by visual artist Patricia Piccinini to write accompanying music for her new Skywhale balloon sculpture. ‘We are the Skywhales’ was performed live at the world premiere of this work, for the National Gallery of Australia, and a soundtrack composed by Jess, accompanies the sculptures on their national tour. In 2021 Patricia Piccinini commissioned Jess to create an installation for her exhibition ‘A Miracle Constantly Repeating’ which premiered for the Melbourne Rising Festival above Flinders St Station, and continued until June 2022. Recently, Jess performed with Bree van Reyk for Bighart at the Sydney Festival, creating a site specific performance at the Heritage Fleet Shipyard, was commissioned by Luminescence chamber singers for a new work (‘I heard You Sing’), and in July 2022, The Australian Art Orchestra premiered a new work ‘Dream Universe’ commissioned for their Market Street series. Upcoming Jess is working on a full length theatre work for The Street Theatre with Writer Emile Collyer and has completed a Master’s Degree in performance at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
